My boss is a narcissist

My boss is a narcissist

What do you do when your boss makes your working life hell? I’ve worked for this firm for a very long time and used to love my work. That was until we got a new boss. She treats people like shit unless you happen to be one of her cronies who run after her, making her coffee and run her errands. She’s already got some long standing staff sacked because she made them look bad by telling lies. She seems to be so lovely when the big bosses are about. They don’t see what she’s really like. They can’t see through her. Nobody has the guts to stand up to her. I think they’re all afraid of losing their jobs. Please, any advice would be appreciated. I don’t know how long I can keep going into work but there’s not a lot of jobs going about here so leaving isn’t really an option.

  1. I went through the same thing and there is only two options. You either become one of the croonies and forego your values and integrity, in order to not be their target for the time being, or you leave and even move if you have to. As one of the followers you will witness how good people get destroyed, that weren’t willing to sell their soul to the devil, and you will be expected to only applaud if you’re lucky, or to assist if you’re not. If you think you can stay neutral, you’ll have to be on guard all the time, and even then you are never safe from falling out of their grace. They feel and know that you didn’t join their ranks, and they won’t rest until you break and join. I ended up selling and moving, there would have been no way to find another job in the same community with the smear campaign. Tough choices to make.

  2. I can agree first hand that this is a nightmare situation. Even if you are currently in favour, that can change in a heartbeat. The gas lighting completely undermines your confidence until you start believing all of the untruths being spouted. There is no way to stay sane in a workplace being run by a narcissist (or sociopath or psychopath) my only (and very sincere) advice is to get out while you still have confidence! I ended up very sick, vomiting every day on my way to work, trembling in the workplace and eventually suicidal and depressed because I persevered.
    Get out while you can!
